| The Kunekune (pronounced cooney-cooney) is a rare and endangered pig that originated in New Zealand. They make excellent pets
since they are naturally friendly and enjoy the company of humans and
other animals. A kunekune is your best friend at first meeting. They
bond to their "people" very quickly. Kunes try to communicate with you and respond to their
name. Also kunekune can be taught to do tricks. They come running to
greet visitors, and will flop on their side to have their belly rubbed.
The amount of character they possess is amazing.
Kunekune means "fat & round" in the Maori language, and they really
are just that. Easily fattening on pasture alone, they are the only
swine known to fatten on grass alone. They are found in many colors including black,
creme,
red, ginger, brown, or a combination. The hair can be curly, wiry,
smooth, long, or short. Bristles are softer and more hair like than
other pigs. Long hair sometimes form tassels off the tips of the ears.
Many have jowl tassels called piri-piri.
All breeding
gilts and intact boars will be DNA tested, micro chipped, and AKBA
registered to ensure breed purity.. |
